38’ Sabre 38 Mk "Treasure"
The Sabre 38 was designed by Roger Hewson, the founder of Sabre Yachts, and introduced in 1981. About 100 38s were built before the Mark II model was launched in 1988. Our Sabre has the standard deep-draft (6’6”) fin keel and the “aft cabin” interior layout. The boat has excellent 6’4” headroom and all of the berths are well over six feet in length. The interior sleeps six or even eight at a pinch, with a quarterberth to each side (the starboard quarterberth is larger and is billed as a double), two long settee berths in the saloon, one of which pulls out to make another double, and a generous v-berth also capable of sleeping two. The “aft cabin” layout allows the nav station and quarterberths to be closed off from the rest of the boat, allowing for additional privacy. There is a terrific galley to port that includes a deep double sink, a full-sized CNG stove and a 12V refrigerator. The boat has hot and cold pressure water. There is a nav station to port. There is a large walk-through head with a new Raritan PHII marine toilet, small sink, and a hand-held shower. ENGINE
SAILING The Sabre 38 sails brilliantly. The mainmast is set a little bit further forward than on other boats of this type, the result being a slightly larger main and a genoa that is perfectly manageable. The mainsail has four (!) reef points and is equipped with a Stackpack. There is a 135% Doyle genoa on a Harken roller fuller as well as storm jib and a spinnaker in a sock. The consensus is that the boat sails best under full sail until about 14 knots, when it’s time take a reef. INSTRUMENTS
